Quit smoking prescription pills are used to help smokes get rid of this habit. Two common quit smoking prescription medications are bupropion and Varenicline tartrate. These drugs act in different ways.
Bupropion is an anti depressant that works on chemicals in the brain to reduce nicotine cravings. Varenicline tartrate acts on the brain and works to make smoking seem less pleasurable. There are some side effects associated with these drugs. It takes some time for the body to get used to them. Therefore, they are taken in low doses initially and then the dosage is gradually increased. Varenicline can cause side effects like nausea, flatulence, hallucinations, constipation, abnormal dreams, sleeping trouble and headache.
Bupropion can cause side effects like anxiety, headache, insomnia, dry mouth, irritability and in rare cases, seizures. You should inform you doctor of problems like depression, head injuries, prior episodes of seizure or other health problems. These factors will be taken into consideration before prescribing this medication. People who experience severe mood swings, disturbing or violent thoughts, anxiety etc should discontinue the medication and consult a doctor. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery without making sure that the medication does not affect concentration. Quit smoking prescription medications should be used in combination with counseling or other methods.
