Are the Medications Safe?

Medications for nicotine withdrawal symptoms include nicotine gum, patches and oral or nasal sprays. There are other psychotropic agents like Varenicline and bupropion which act on the brain to reduce nicotine cravings and make smoking seem less pleasurable. There are some side effects associated with all these medications. However, all of these are generally safe and used widely to treat nicotine withdrawal.

They are very effective when used in combination with counseling. Nicotine patches are worn on the skin at any point between the neck and waist. It may cause skin rashes in some people. Nicotine gum can cause side effects like jaw pain, sore mouth, indigestion, hiccups etc. Oral and nasal sprays can cause some irritation. Bupropion is associated with side effects like anxiety, headache, insomnia, dry mouth, irritability etc. This medication can cause seizures in rare cases.

Varenicline can cause nausea, sleep disturbances, mood changes etc. These medications are contraindicated in some cases like pregnancy, breastfeeding, heart problems, kidney problems etc. Some of these medications may interact with other drugs also. A doctor will be able to assess your overall health, medical history etc to determine the mediations most suitable for you.
