Helping Your Teen to Stop Smoking

Set your teen down and talk. Although talking to them seems almost impossible these days, set a time and just do it. Explain to your teen that you want to help them to get rid of this unhealthy habit and that you will be there for them all the way.

Let your teen know that you respect him or her enough to realize that they are addicted and an addiction is not an easy thing to kick. Encourage them in any way you can.

Ask your teen if he wants to quit smoking. If the answer is yes have him list all the reasons why he wants to quit.  If the answer is no you have to convince him or her that smoking is not good for them and they should not smoke. Keep working with them until you have convinced them to stop.

Together set a date to quit. Just make sure it is not at exam time.

Do they hang out with friends that smoke? Would their friends object to them stop smoking? If so, they need to look for friends who don’t smoke.

Get them into a support group. Whether it be at school, a clinic or a doctor, they need a support group.

Prepare them or the nicotine withdrawals. Educate your self to educate them.

Use stop smoking aids if needed.

Reward your teen for a day without a cigarette a week, two weeks, etc. Stop smoking has its rewards.
